EM+CASS began in the most unexpected place—an ordinary conversation with two extraordinary girls. One afternoon, my nieces Emerson and Cassidy and I were talking about all the things you talk to teenage girls about—friends, school, trends, and of course, clothes. Fashion is one of their favorite subjects, and soon they began asking about my career in the clothing world. They told me what they loved, what they didn't, what their friends were into, and how styles suddenly "become a thing." Then my 13-year-old niece said something that stopped me completely. She said, "I like finding brands not everyone is wearing and sharing them with my friend group—you know, my community."
Community. A simple word. An old word. But in that moment, hearing it through the sincerity of a teenager, it felt entirely redefined. Not new—just clearer. More intentional. More powerful. And then it hit me. These girls—and all girls and boys—don't just want clothing. They want space. Space to define themselves. Space to choose what represents them. Space where the brand doesn't define them… they define the brand.
That idea lingered. It grew. And then something happened that made everything fall into place. A few days later, I went to Emerson's volleyball game. Twelve girls on the team, six on the court at a time. Every time they scored—or even when they missed—they would gather into a tight huddle. Every single point. They congratulated each other, consoled each other, lifted each other up as a collective. It wasn't about winning or losing. It was about the journey. The unity. The community they had created for themselves.
Watching those girls surround each other with that much encouragement, sweetness, and strength was… defining. This was what we should all be striving for—not just as teenagers, but as humans navigating every stage of life. Community. Support. Authentic expression. And the confidence to decide who you are, and what you want the world to see.
That moment became the heartbeat of EM+CASS. A brand inspired by two girls who unknowingly taught me everything clothing should be about: identity, individuality, and the communities we build around us. EM+CASS was created for them—and for every young person who deserves the space, the voice, and the freedom to define themselves on their own terms.
Because it's not about the jeans, the hoodie, or the label. It's about how you define it. It's about how they define it. It's about how we define ourselves—together.
Welcome to EM+CASS. A community in the making. A brand defined by you.
